[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] A celebration event focusing on the Black and African American communities will be held on the eve of the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden. The theme of the inauguration is "United States of America."

According to the Associated Press on the 18th (local time), one of the virtual events called "We Are One" will be held on the 19th, one day before Biden's official inauguration, and will be broadcast on TV and social media. The event's theme centers on the culture, heroic qualities, and resilience of the Black and African diaspora (those who have left their homeland and live scattered around the world).

Tony Allen, chair of the inauguration committee, explained, "This event honors the commitment to unity, actions for recovery, and heroic qualities demonstrated by Black, Latino, Asian, and Pacific Islander communities."

The speech will be delivered by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who will become the "first Black vice president" and "first Asian American vice president," with a Jamaican father and Indian mother. Other Black leaders such as Jim Clyburn (Democrat, South Carolina), House Majority Whip, and Stacey Abrams, former Georgia state legislator, will also take the stage.

There will also be a segment reflecting on the achievements of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Howard University in Washington, DC, where Vice President-elect Harris graduated, and their campus social clubs. HBCUs refer to colleges established for Black students before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, at a time when most higher education institutions did not admit Black students.
