Andong-si Discovered 26 Independence Activists Last Year and Applied for Awards to the Veterans Affairs Office

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Andong City announced on the 19th that it will actively work to discover hidden independence activists who risked their lives for the country's independence but have not yet received commendations from the government.

Since the opening of the Andong Independence Movement Memorial Hall in 2007, Andong City has been steadily discovering and investigating independence activists together with the Gyeongsangbuk-do Independence Movement Memorial Hall. From 2020 to 2022, they have been conducting a project to discover unrecognized independence activists from Andong.

In the first year, 2020, a list of 561 unrecognized independence activists was compiled, and among them, 56 were discovered and investigated. Of these, 26 individuals have been submitted to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs for review as candidates for commendation.

When classifying the activists who applied for commendation by their movement affiliation, there was 1 Uibyeong (righteous army) member, 3 domestic anti-Japanese activists, 5 socialist movement activists, 15 March 1st Movement participants, and 2 activists in the Japan sector, with the March 1st Movement being the largest group.

According to Andong City, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is currently reviewing 21 of the 26 individuals. Among them, 2 are expected to have results announced on March 1st, 2021, and 19 before Liberation Day.

As of December 31, 2020, the number of independence patriots from Andong who have been honored for their dedication to the independence movement during the Japanese colonial period is 369, the highest among basic local governments nationwide.
