Regional Universities with Strong Industry-Academia Links and High Employment Rates Show Progress
Top Seoul Universities Include Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, Sogang University

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Korea University of Technology and Education, located in Cheonan, Chungnam, ranked first in employment rate among four-year universities.
On the 19th, Jongno Academy Haneul Education analyzed the employment rates of four-year universities with more than 500 graduates, and Korea University of Technology and Education ranked first with an employment rate of 84.7%. Following were Mokpo National Maritime University (82.0%), Kyungdong University (81.3%), Eulji University (79.3%), Sungkyunkwan University (79.3%), and Gaya University (77.0%).
The reason for the high employment rates of regional universities is attributed to the many departments with strong industry-academia linkage and relatively high employment rates. Korea University of Technology and Education’s Department of Architectural Engineering, Mokpo National Maritime University’s Department of Marine Mechatronics and Department of Navigation, and Kyungdong University’s Department of Computer Applications and Department of IT Convergence all had employment rates exceeding 90%.
Among major Seoul universities with more than 3,000 graduates, the rankings were ▲Sungkyunkwan University 5th ▲Hanyang University 11th ▲Sogang University 12th ▲Korea University 13th ▲Yonsei University 15th ▲Seoul National University 20th. The majors with high employment rates in major universities were mostly in engineering and medical fields. Majors with employment rates above 90% included Sungkyunkwan University’s Software Department, Semiconductor Systems Engineering Department, Architecture Department, Medical Department, Chemical Engineering Department, Pharmacy Department, and Systems Management Engineering Department. Hanyang University had Educational Engineering, Medical, and Software majors; Korea University had Medical and Cyber Defense majors; Yonsei University had Dentistry, Pharmacy, Medical, Chinese Language and Literature, and Nursing majors; Seoul National University had Pharmacy, Department of Agricultural Economics and Social Sciences Regional Information major, Biomaterials Engineering major, Medical, and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering majors.
The employment rates of regional national universities were in the 50-60% range. Chungnam National University had the highest at 61.1%, followed by ▲Chonnam National University (Gwangju) 60.1% ▲Pusan National University 58.6% ▲Kyungpook National University 57.8% ▲Jeju National University 57.4% ▲Jeonbuk National University 57.3% ▲Chungbuk National University 57.0% ▲Kangwon National University (Chuncheon) 55.5% ▲Gyeongsang National University 50.2%.

Based on all four-year universities, the employment rate of 2019 graduates was 63.4%, a 1.0 percentage point decrease from the previous year (64.4%). By field, the medical and pharmaceutical fields had the highest employment rate (84.4%), followed by engineering (67.0%), arts and physical education (62.5%), social sciences (61.4%), natural sciences (59.7%), and humanities (55.6%), with education having the lowest at 47.3%.
