7-Year Cancer Insurance Broken for Donation: Heartwarming Story of a Seongbuk-gu Basic Livelihood Security Recipient Sparks Attention

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) expressed gratitude by awarding commendations to 17 citizens (individuals and groups) who contributed to COVID-19 response efforts over five days starting from the 11th.

To prevent COVID-19, the number of awardees was limited to a maximum of three per day, and the ceremony was conducted twice daily, in the morning and afternoon, strictly adhering to quarantine guidelines.

Among the awardees were residents who voluntarily formed private quarantine teams and bravely engaged in disinfection activities despite fears of infection. They conducted disinfection without hesitation even in vulnerable facilities such as multi-use facilities and social welfare centers.

A particularly notable awardee at this ceremony was Mr. Kang 0-dong (63) from Gireum-dong, who, despite being a basic livelihood security recipient, canceled his cancer insurance policy that he had maintained for about seven years to donate and help residents struggling due to COVID-19. His donation sparked a ripple effect, inspiring others around him and initiating a "donation relay."

Mr. Jeong 0-yeon (76), residing in Jangwi-dong, led the "Love Cotton Mask Making and Sharing Event" in the first half of last year while participating in the Jangwi 1-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee. Masks made through talent donations from community leaders such as neighborhood association heads were donated to low-income households, easing their psychological burden of purchasing masks.

Mr. Cheon 0-su (74) from Bomun-dong also promoted the production of "16,000 Hope Bomun Masks," collaborating with a sewing factory to produce cotton masks and distributing them to Bomun-dong residents. This effort was evaluated as transforming the crisis caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic into an opportunity to restore community spirit.

Additionally, there were residents who practiced sharing by personally preparing and distributing kimchi and samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) for elderly living alone who desperately needed help during times when face-to-face contact was difficult.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, "Our citizens who voluntarily stood together on the front lines against COVID-19 in times of crisis are the hidden heroes of the COVID-19 era," and added, "The role of residents within the community is very important, especially in difficult times. We will actively seek out and express our gratitude to residents who dedicate themselves to the community."
