[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Kakao is launching a KakaoTalk app exclusively for Android OS-based tablets, including the Galaxy Tab.
According to the IT industry on the 18th, Kakao is currently preparing a version of KakaoTalk tailored for some Android OS-based tablet products. Development has already progressed significantly, and it is expected to be released starting with the Galaxy Tab as early as this month.
This will allow Android OS-based tablet users to log in simultaneously on a total of three devices: PC, smartphone, and tablet.
Until now, Android OS users could not use KakaoTalk simultaneously on both smartphones and tablets. KakaoTalk is basically limited to one mobile device per phone number, and Android tablets are recognized as the same type of mobile device as smartphones, making simultaneous login impossible.
Although the mobile KakaoTalk app can be installed on tablets, logging in on a tablet would log out the KakaoTalk session on the smartphone, causing significant inconvenience. As a result, users have linked their smartphone KakaoTalk and tablets through external apps such as ‘KakaoTalk Delivery.’ However, linking via external apps only allows limited KakaoTalk functionality.
On the other hand, Apple’s operating system iOS can distinguish between smartphones and tablets (iPads). Accordingly, Kakao released KakaoTalk for iPad in 2018. Apple also separated the iPad OS from iOS in 2019, introducing a dedicated OS for iPads.
A Kakao representative stated, "There has been strong user demand for this, so we have been preparing it, but the release date is currently undecided."
