"Grandparent Care Work Should Receive Fair Social Compensation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People Party who declared his candidacy for the Seoul mayoral by-election, announced on the 18th that he will promote a grandchild care allowance of up to 400,000 won per month.
At the highest committee meeting held at the National Assembly on the same day, Ahn said, "In a reality where grandparents take responsibility for a significant portion of care labor, providing fair social compensation is just and reasonable."
Ahn explained, "For Seoul citizens who have lived in Seoul for more than one year, if grandparents take care of their grandchildren, regardless of paternal or maternal side, one primary caregiving grandparent will receive a grandchild care allowance of up to 200,000 won per month based on 40 hours per grandchild. In the case of twins or two children with an age gap, the allowance will be up to 400,000 won."
Ahn added, "We will also prepare additional support measures for elderly grandparents who are already fully raising their grandchildren so that they do not feel relatively deprived."
