[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hye-min] On the 17th, independent lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo fiercely criticized Kim Jong-in, the emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party, for mentioning the possibility of a 'three-way race' for the Seoul mayoral election, calling it a "self-serving argument out of touch with the times."
On the same day, Hong said on his Facebook, "It reminds me of DJ's (former President Kim Dae-jung's) fourth winning theory in 1987. At that time, DJ came in third," adding, "It is not a three-way winning theory but merely a three-way losing theory."
Regarding former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon's conditional candidacy, which was made while demanding Ahn Cheol-soo, the leader of the People’s Party, to join the People Power Party, Hong evaluated it as a "masterstroke among masterstrokes."
Hong said, "He found the justification to run again for the Seoul mayoral position he had abandoned from candidate Ahn," adding, "As he officially announced his candidacy, all the People Power Party candidates competed to criticize candidate Oh. Among the People Power Party candidates, Oh seems to be the strongest."
About leader Ahn, he urged him to complete the race, saying, "If he withdraws again without a fight this time, he will inevitably have to withdraw from politics forever."
Hong also emphasized opposition unity. He said, "If the big three opposition candidates unite beautifully, no matter who becomes the candidate, the Seoul mayor will be an opposition candidate," adding, "The other two will make a beautiful sacrifice by creating a stepping stone for regime change, just like the winner."
