[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] A new era of home theaters is opening where TV variety show participants appear right before my eyes, allowing us to enjoy together beyond time and space.
SK Telecom announced on the 18th that it has produced the trailer of the baseball variety show "Manyeodeul - Standing on the Ground," which has recently been released on WAVVE and gained attention, in the form of Mixed Reality (MR), and that customers can enjoy related content through its 'Jump AR' platform.
This is interpreted as a signal of full-scale collaboration between broadcasters producing various content and telecommunications companies possessing MR technology and platforms, which are core services in the 5G era. It is expected to drive the growth of the MR entertainment market in the future.
SK Telecom filmed seven main cast members, including comedian Kim Minkyeong, Apink member Bomi, former gymnast Shin Suji, and cheerleader Park Girang, at the 'Jump Studio' located on the first floor of T Tower using Volumetric Video Capture technology, realizing them as augmented reality (AR) characters with vivid and diverse motions.
Viewers can summon the characters of the participants in AR in real time through the 'Jump AR' player application while watching the broadcast, experiencing a new home theater that transcends time and space.
SK Telecom expects that the combination of existing 2D TV content and MR content integrated with AR technology will lead the innovation of viewing paradigms in the untact era.
The trailer video of Manyeodeul is also produced as MR content blending AR and virtual space. SK Telecom created about a one-minute MR trailer by summoning the AR characters of the participants realized through Jump Studio to a virtual baseball stadium. The video is scheduled to be released from today on MBC’s YouTube channel ‘MBC News’.
This is the first time that a variety show trailer video of a domestic terrestrial broadcaster has been produced in MR format. SK Telecom expects that this attempt will contribute to increasing public interest and familiarity with mixed reality content.
Jeon Jinsu, head of SK Telecom’s MR Service CO, said, “We are pleased to combine MBC’s content IP and SKT’s MR technology to give ‘Manyeodeul’ viewers the joy of watching TV while simultaneously summoning hologram celebrities,” adding, “We plan to lead the MR entertainment market through collaboration with various cultural fields such as broadcasting, movies, and concerts in the future.”
