[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the first teaser images of the first model of its dedicated electric vehicle brand IONIQ, the 'IONIQ 5,' for the first time on the 13th.
The IONIQ 5 is the first model to apply Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated electric vehicle platform, 'E-GMP,' and is a key strategic vehicle that will open a new era of electric vehicles. E-GMP is a new platform that can travel over 500 km on a single charge (based on WLTP standards) and can be charged up to 80% within 18 minutes when using an ultra-fast charger.
The first model of the dedicated brand IONIQ, differentiated electric vehicle design
Hyundai Motor applied the brand's core design element, 'Parametric Pixel,' and eco-friendly colors and materials to the IONIQ 5. Parametric Pixel is a unique design element of the IONIQ 5 that shapes pixels, the smallest units that make up an image.
This symbolizes the fusion of analog and digital, transcending generations, and is applied to the IONIQ 5's headlamps, taillights, and wheels to create a progressive and futuristic image.
Starting with the IONIQ 5, Hyundai plans to expand the use of eco-friendly colors and materials in future dedicated electric vehicle models. This is to not only convey the unique sensibility of the IONIQ brand but also to establish it as a sustainable brand.
The front of the IONIQ 5 features Hyundai's first 'Clamshell Hood,' which wraps the entire upper part, minimizing the parting lines where surfaces meet and dividing by lines, completing a sleek yet high-tech impression. The side is equipped with wheels featuring the largest diameter ever for a Hyundai electric vehicle, 20-inch aerodynamic wheels, achieving perfect electric vehicle proportions.
Lee Sang-yup, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Design, emphasized, "Through the IONIQ 5, we will offer a new design experience never seen before," and added, "The IONIQ brand will set new standards for electric vehicle design."
Hyundai releases videos showcasing core technologies of the 'IONIQ 5'
Hyundai raised expectations for its first dedicated electric vehicle model by releasing four videos featuring the core technologies of the IONIQ 5. The videos include three episodes of 'Ultimate Camping,' which utilize high-power electronic devices through the IONIQ 5, and one episode of the '5-Minute Challenge,' where the IONIQ 5 competes in charging against various digital devices.
The Ultimate Camping videos humorously depict protagonists using household electronic devices for camping, which was previously impossible, through the IONIQ 5's V2L (Vehicle to Load) technology that supplies general power (110V/220V) outside the vehicle.
In each video, the IONIQ 5's V2L 3.5KW high power is used to cook turkey in a large electric oven at the camping site, enjoy music with multiple high-end speakers, and exercise on a treadmill.
The 5-Minute Challenge video interestingly showcases the IONIQ 5's ultra-fast charging capability, which allows driving over 100 km with a 5-minute charge, through a competition format between protagonists. The video shows a movie trailer-style scene where the IONIQ 5 and three digital devices?an action cam, a laptop, and a smartphone?are charged for 5 minutes, and the chosen protagonists compete to see who lasts longer.
