Orion 'Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor' Surpasses 10 Million Packs in 4 Months

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Orion announced on the 13th that ‘Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor’ surpassed 11 million cumulative sales within 4 months of its launch. This means about 100,000 packs were sold daily, and the cumulative sales revenue exceeded 11 billion KRW.

Launched last September, Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor surpassed 3.5 million packs sold within 50 days of release, and then sales nearly doubled over the following two months, accelerating its sales momentum. Despite being an extension of an existing product, such explosive sales growth is considered very rare in the confectionery industry. In December, it recorded a monthly highest sales of 3.3 billion KRW, establishing itself as the top hit product in the second half of 2020.

This achievement is analyzed to be due to the online response that drove the initial popularity of Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor spreading continuously through voluntary word-of-mouth, stimulating consumers’ desire to purchase. The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has also increased interest in sweet snacks that provide small pleasures in daily life, which is cited as another factor for its popularity. Additionally, the unique crispy and melting texture of Kkobuk Chip combined with the rich, popular taste of chocolate continues to receive favorable reviews.

The popularity of Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor has spread overseas to countries such as China and the United States, where there are ongoing demands for product launches locally. Accordingly, in China, there are plans to launch the product in the first half of this year through local production. In snack origin countries like the U.S., consumer requests for Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor continue, and exports are under consideration. Along with this, Orion’s strategy is to expand the lineup with various flavors tailored to overseas consumers’ preferences and grow Kkobuk Chip into a global brand following Choco Pie.

An Orion official said, “Word-of-mouth continues on social networking services (SNS), and the sell-out streak of Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros Flavor continues unchanged in 2021,” adding, “This year as well, we will target the global confectionery market with various new products loved by consumers.”
