Intromedic Obtains European CE Certification for 2nd Generation Upper Gastrointestinal Capsule Endoscopy

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Intromedic has obtained the European Union (EU) European Conformity (CE) certification for its upper gastrointestinal capsule endoscope that captures 24 images per second.

On the 12th, Intromedic announced that four types of upper gastrointestinal capsule endoscopes developed in March 2019 in collaboration with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea have received the European CE certification.

The approved capsule endoscope is based on in-body communication technology that uses a weak electric current flowing through the human body as a medium for information transmission. It enables high-speed shooting at 24 frames per second, allowing the transmission of more information compared to existing products. It also has the advantage of being able to control position and posture.

With this approval, the scope of examination, which was previously limited to the small intestine, can effectively diagnose the esophagus and stomach, which account for over 50% of human digestive diseases, and the company expects the usage range of capsule endoscopes to expand significantly.

An Intromedic official stated, "This European CE certification is the first step toward expanding the capsule endoscope market," adding, "Since we have obtained certification in Europe, the second largest medical device market worldwide, we plan to actively expand our market share in Europe and globally through aggressive sales activities."

Additionally, to strengthen sales activities in the global market, Intromedic plans to accelerate overseas certifications, including the US FDA and China's CFDA.
