[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A man in his 30s who assaulted and threatened his girlfriend and also sexually assaulted the victim's 3-year-old daughter was sentenced to prison.

The Jeju District Court's 2nd Criminal Division (Chief Judge Jang Chan-su) announced on the 8th that it sentenced Byeon Mo (36), who was tried on charges including quasi-forcible sexual assault of a minor under 13, threats, and assault, to 4 years and 6 months in prison.

The court also ordered him to complete 40 hours of sexual violence treatment programs and imposed a 5-year employment ban at child and youth-related institutions and welfare institutions for the disabled. Byeon, who had been tried without detention, was taken into custody immediately after the sentencing.

In the summer of 2019, Byeon approached and forcibly molested B (3), the child of A, his then-girlfriend, while she was sleeping at A's home in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si.

From around January 2020, after his relationship with A deteriorated, Byeon began to threaten her. Byeon threatened, "If you don't pay the money back, I will send sex videos to your ex-husband," and actually sent the videos.

In early last year, Byeon threatened A by saying, "I will ruin your and your daughter's life," and exposed to A's mother that her daughter (A) was working at a prostitution establishment.

When the presiding judge pointed out, "Did you date A knowing she was involved in such work (prostitution)? Why do you blame her just because the relationship soured? This is not the behavior of someone who loved her," Byeon tearfully said, "I sincerely apologize to the victim's family."

The court stated, "The crime is serious as it involved molesting a child who is physically and mentally immature, making self-defense difficult, and whose awareness and values regarding sex are not yet properly established."

It added, "The defendant also mocked the victim's mother. The crimes committed against A, with whom the defendant was in a relationship, are also quite heinous," and noted, "A is petitioning for severe punishment."
