Creating 4 Safe and Secure Villages in Urban Regeneration New Deal Areas

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) was selected as the best local government in the Ministry of Justice's law and order establishment field last year for the Crime Prevention Environmental Improvement Project (CPTED) and received an institutional commendation.

The Crime Prevention Environmental Improvement Project is a program that supports consulting for crime prevention planning and resident capacity-building programs to prevent crime and reduce citizens' anxiety by preemptively removing environmental factors that provide opportunities for crime.

On June 22 last year, the Bukmun-ro area, a New Deal urban regeneration zone, was selected as a target site for the Crime Prevention Environmental Improvement Project through a Ministry of Justice public contest. Together with local residents, they completed village crime prevention planning, creating village safety maps, and resident capacity-building programs.

The Bukmun-ro area of Suncheon City is recognized as a collaborative project between the Ministry of Justice and central government agencies, earning additional points and expected to gain momentum in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's urban regeneration New Deal project contest.

Additionally, four villages in the Suncheon-type urban regeneration area?Jeojeon-dong Nam Elementary School smart safe school routes, terminal area safe and secure streets, traveler safe streets in the Suncheon station area, and Yeonhyang-dong youth safe streets?are also being promoted as part of the Crime Prevention Environmental Improvement Project, which has been highly evaluated.

A Suncheon City official stated, "While promoting the urban regeneration New Deal project, we plan to actively identify and improve crime-vulnerable environments in the old downtown area through cooperation with the Ministry of Justice to create the safest village where local residents can live comfortably."

Meanwhile, the Bukmun-ro area is a phase 4 revitalization zone according to Suncheon City's urban regeneration strategic plan, and plans to promote projects through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's urban regeneration New Deal project contest for crime prevention environmental improvement, youth and university culture revitalization, living SOC creation, and restoration of resident communities.
