Investment of 10 Billion KRW in 9 Projects Including Songjeong-gil Specialized Project Utilizing Embankments, Annual Implementation Until 2023... Passed Review by Seoul Urban Regeneration Committee on 17th Last Month for Urban Regeneration Activation Plan (Draft)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that the urban regeneration activation plan for the Songjeong-dong area passed the 9th Seoul Urban Regeneration Committee review on December 17 last year, and plans to invest a total of 10 billion KRW by 2023 to proceed in earnest.
Songjeong-dong is located in the lower reaches of the Jungnangcheon Stream and is a neighborhood densely packed with old low-rise residential areas arranged in a grid-like alley pattern.
It features Songjeong Embankment, one of Seoul’s “Top 10 Streets to Walk,” and with the continuous influx of knowledge industry center businesses in nearby Seongsu-dong, there is a high potential for regional revitalization such as population growth.
The area designated for urban regeneration activation that passed this review covers 295,000㎡.
The district has made significant efforts over the past four years to promote urban regeneration in Songjeong-dong. Since June 2017, starting with the Urban Regeneration Hope Site project, it was selected as a Seoul-type urban regeneration activation area (Neighborhood Regeneration General Type) in September 2018, and has undergone various resident opinion collection processes including 20 visiting resident briefings, 18 resident workshops, and public hearings.
Additionally, through expert advisory meetings and monitoring (twice), as well as hearing opinions from the district council and advice from the district urban regeneration committee, the urban regeneration activation plan (draft) was prepared.
The vision for the Songjeong-dong activation plan is “Songjeong overflowing with happiness along the road,” with core goals of “a riverside path you want to walk, a Songjeong street you want to stay on, and a Songjeong village full of happiness.”
In particular, it consists of nine diverse and concrete projects including ▲ establishment of a generation empathy platform ▲ creation of a nature-friendly children’s imagination yard ▲ creation of resident small group resting areas ▲ construction of sloped entrances for pedestrian safety ▲ revitalization of Gwangnaru-ro 11-gil ▲ creation of themed alleyways ▲ creation of alley parks ▲ establishment of a happiness-filled platform ▲ operation of an urban regeneration support center.
In addition, projects such as ▲ home repair for beautification ▲ maintenance of beautified houses and alleyways on Songjeong 10-gil ▲ Songjeong-dong alleyway regeneration project ▲ signboard improvement project on Gwangnaru-ro 11-gil ▲ solar energy distribution project ▲ construction of Songjeong-dong public complex building are also being promoted to enhance residents’ experience of urban regeneration.
Meanwhile, despite difficulties in resident meetings related to urban regeneration projects due to COVID-19 this year, 16 resident public contest teams were selected while maintaining social distancing.
Also, in cooperation with Cube Entertainment, a promotional video introducing Songjeong urban regeneration was produced together with the idol group CLC, garnering 70,000 views.
Furthermore, instead of holding an urban regeneration festival, a non-face-to-face resident contest (selecting 36 works) and other resident capacity-building and community activation projects were steadily promoted, eliciting high resident response.
Last month, a Songjeong Urban Regeneration integrated BI (Brand Identity) was developed, reflecting the geographical characteristics of Songjeong-dong where Jungnangcheon Stream and Songjeong Embankment Road are located.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Through the full-scale promotion of Songjeong-dong’s unique urban regeneration projects, we will create a Songjeong-dong that changes and develops further together with its residents.”
