[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Child sex offender Jo Doo-soon has applied for the customized benefits of the National Basic Livelihood Security, which is provided to low-income households facing financial difficulties.
On the 7th, YTN reported that Jo Doo-soon, after his release, applied for livelihood benefits and basic pension along with his spouse at the Danwon District Office in Ansan City in mid-last month.
If Jo Doo-soon is recognized as a recipient of the Basic Livelihood Security, he will receive up to about 1.2 million KRW per month, including 926,000 KRW for livelihood benefits and 268,000 KRW for housing benefits based on a two-person household.
The criteria for recipient designation include work ability, income, and assets, and currently, Jo Doo-soon, who is over 65 years old, is classified as having no work ability.
His spouse is under 65 years old but is experiencing work interruption and difficulties in reemployment due to chronic illness and surrounding circumstances.
Accordingly, it is reported that Jo Doo-soon is highly likely to receive Basic Livelihood Security benefits.
The decision on recipient status will be made within 60 days after the application.
According to YTN, the Ministry of Health and Welfare stated that the Basic Livelihood Security Act is a matter separate from crimes, and since ex-convicts can commit other crimes when cornered, the system is ultimately designed to protect law-abiding citizens.
