Nation's First School Commute Safety System 'Safe Ai-ro (路)' to Be Developed

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kang Sharon] The Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education announced on the 7th that it will create a school commute safety system called ‘Safe Airo(路)’ that allows users to view information about school commute routes around elementary schools in the province at a glance.

‘Safe Airo(路)’ means ‘raising children safely’ and also refers to the concept of ‘safe school commute routes (路) with road names.’

The purpose is for the Office of Education to directly manage and analyze students’ commute route information and work together with local governments, the police agency, and private organizations to resolve issues that need improvement. This is the first project of its kind to be established among metropolitan and provincial offices of education nationwide.

Safe Airo will include ▲main pedestrian routes for school commutes ▲designated child protection zones ▲separation status of sidewalks and roads within protection zones ▲traffic signals and unmanned traffic enforcement equipment ▲traffic accident occurrence status, among other data.

The system will be created in the form of an electronic map to allow users to view commute route information scattered across various institutions such as local governments and the police agency at a glance. After completion, information around schools will also be provided to parents, students, and residents through a web service.

In the future, the system plans to gradually expand its use annually by adding school bus routes and notification services, which are commute-related contents of high interest to parents.

Superintendent Park Jong-hoon said, “Through the school commute safety system, we will do our best to manage safety outside of schools, such as improving commute routes, and create safe schools with systematic safety accident prevention measures, including practical training so that students can wisely respond to crisis situations on their own.”
