[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] The government is promoting the linkage between the National Health Insurance and private insurance, specifically indemnity health insurance, to alleviate the medical expenses burden on the public.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Financial Services Commission announced that they will publicly notify partial amendments to the 'National Health Insurance Act' and the 'Insurance Business Act' from the 7th to February 16th to establish the legal basis for linkage and cooperation between the National Health Insurance and private health insurance.
As the need for cooperation between the public insurance, National Health Insurance, and private indemnity health insurance related to citizens' medical expenses has been continuously raised, the two ministries prepared the amendment after discussions in the public-private insurance policy council on December 24th last year.
The amendment stipulates the legal grounds for the two ministries to jointly establish and operate a Public-Private Medical Insurance Linkage Committee to comprehensively coordinate related policies and to conduct surveys to grasp the current status.
More detailed matters will be regulated through a jointly enacted enforcement decree under the jurisdiction of both ministries, as delegated by the amendment.
During the public notification period, the two ministries plan to widely collect opinions, finalize the government legislative amendment after review by the Ministry of Government Legislation, and submit it to the National Assembly.
