'3-Time European Champion' Wang Jeonghun "Enlisting in February"..."See You in 2 Years~"

Second Fewest 3 Wins Since Woods at 2017 Qatar Masters "Will Show Better Performance After Military Discharge"

'3-Time European Champion' Wang Jeonghun "Enlisting in February"..."See You in 2 Years~" Wang Jeonghun will enlist as an active-duty soldier next month to fulfill his military service obligation.

[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] 'European 3-win champ' Wang Jeong-hoon (26) is temporarily leaving the field.

On the 4th, he said, "I will enlist in the military this coming February," adding, "I do not know the exact date yet as my draft notice has not been issued." Wang Jeong-hoon, who stated that "it is a duty that every citizen of the Republic of Korea must fulfill," said, "I will enlist as an active-duty soldier" and pledged, "I will train diligently." He added, "I will reflect on the time I have spent tirelessly as a golfer and set new goals," and "I want to show a better version of myself after discharge."

Wang Jeong-hoon is the player who won the 2017 Qatar Masters and became the second fastest 3-win champion since the 'Returned Golf Emperor' Tiger Woods (USA, 1999, 12 events). He joined the European Tour in 2016 and achieved this in just 29 events. He set a remarkable record as the third youngest 3-win champion (21 years and 144 days), following Matteo Manassero (Italy, 3 wins at age 19) and Seve Ballesteros (Spain, 3 wins at age 20), who passed away in 2011.

Wang Jeong-hoon progressed through the China Professional Golf Association (CPGA) Tour in 2012 and entered the Asian Professional Golfers Association (APGA) Tour in 2014. In May 2016, he won the Hassan II Trophy after a playoff against Nacho Elvira (Spain), joining the ranks of European Tour champions, and swept up 'back-to-back wins' at the Mauritius Open. In August of the same year, he represented South Korea alongside An Byeong-hoon (30, CJ Logistics) at the Rio Olympics in Brazil. He is currently taking a breather after his three European Tour wins.

In 2020, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), he stayed in Korea and participated in the Korean Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) Korean Tour. He played in five tournaments and qualified for the main rounds in all of them. Including a tie for 3rd place at the Shinhan Donghae Open, he entered the 'Top 10' three times and ranked 26th in prize money (125.22 million KRW). His driving force was leading in putts per hole (1.71). Wang Jeong-hoon also said, "It was a satisfying year," but added, "I regret not capitalizing on the chances to win."
