KOSDAQ Also Surpasses 970... Year-End Bull Market Momentum Continues
[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] In the first stock market session of the new year, the KOSPI surpassed 2900 for the first time ever.
As of 10:48 AM on the 4th, the KOSPI recorded 2901.46. It then widened its gains, reaching 2921.31 around 11:08 AM, setting a new all-time high. The bullish trend from the end of last year appears to be continuing into the first trading day of the new year. In the KOSDAQ market, the index recorded 972.64 early in the session, marking the highest level in 20 years since September 15, 2000, when it was 992.50.
The strong buying power of individual investors is interpreted as the driving force behind the index's rise. Individuals net purchased 763.8 billion KRW in the KOSPI alone. They also bought 195 billion KRW worth of shares in the KOSDAQ. In total, nearly 1 trillion KRW was purchased across both markets.
On the other hand, foreigners and institutions showed net selling, appearing to realize profits. In the KOSPI market, foreigners and institutions net sold 70.6 billion KRW and 704.3 billion KRW, respectively. In the KOSDAQ market, they sold 71.3 billion KRW and 121.1 billion KRW worth of shares, respectively.
Most of the top market capitalization stocks are on the rise. Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Mobis increased by 15.2% and 9.3%, respectively. They were followed by LG Chem (5.5%), SK Hynix (4.6%), Samsung SDI (4.6%), and Samsung Electronics (0.8%). Conversely, Celltrion (-2.9%), NAVER (-1.2%), and Samsung Biologics (-0.3%) declined.
