Ministry of Environment Selects 4 Regions in Jeonnam for 'Smart Green City Development Project'

Ministry of Environment Selects 4 Regions in Jeonnam for 'Smart Green City Development Project' Jeonnam Provincial Government Office.

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gangjin, Suncheon, Jangheung, and Haenam in Jeonnam have been selected for the Ministry of Environment's 'Smart Green City Development Project.'

According to Jeonnam Province on the 31st, this project, promoted to enhance urban climate change resilience and promote green transformation of living spaces, is a representative project of the government's Green New Deal announced last July for 'restoring the green ecosystem of cities.'

It is a region-customized environmental improvement project that integrates various environmental fields such as climate, water, air, and resource circulation to address urban climate and environmental issues.

Among 100 local governments nationwide that applied, the Ministry of Environment conducted document, on-site, and comprehensive evaluations and finally selected 25 regions nationwide.

In the province, one region (Gangjin) was selected for the 'Comprehensive Leading Model' to solve local environmental issues and promote urban green transformation, and three regions (Suncheon, Jangheung, Haenam) were selected for the 'Problem-Solving Model,' which combines two or more projects to address climate and environmental issues in a region-customized way, securing the second-largest number of projects after Gyeonggi Province.

The Smart Green City project will be promoted nationwide over two years starting next year with a total project cost of 290 billion KRW. The province plans to invest 16 billion KRW (9.6 billion KRW national funds) in the Comprehensive Leading Model and 30.4 billion KRW (18 billion KRW national funds) in the Problem-Solving Model.

In particular, detailed project plans will be established in the first half of next year, followed by signing the Smart Green City implementation agreement to actively promote the project.

So far, Jeonnam Province has held visiting briefing sessions inviting the Ministry of Environment's Smart Green City support team to encourage active participation of cities and counties in the application process.

Additionally, various measures such as operating consulting support teams under provincial agencies and providing project planning funds to cities and counties that discover excellent ideas have been prepared and supported.

Lee Beom-woo, Director of the Climate Ecology Division of Jeonnam Province, said, "We will strengthen human and financial support for the selected projects to become a role model for solving environmental problems nationwide."
