'Transparent OLED' to be showcased at 'CES 2021' for diverse real-life applications
Operating 3 zones including Smart Home, Metro, and Restaurant
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] LG Display announced on the 31st that it will unveil its 'transparent OLED,' which is used in various real-life applications, at 'CES 2021,' the world's largest IT and home appliance exhibition held online on January 11 next year (local time).
As the only company in the world mass-producing transparent OLEDs, LG Display plans to showcase various usage scenes through three transparent OLED exhibition zones: Smart Home, Metro, and Restaurant.
In the Smart Home zone, a 'Smart Bed' combining a bed and transparent OLED will be introduced for home use. The Smart Bed allows the transparent OLED to rise from inside the bed frame in various aspect ratios as needed, enabling users to check weather information or watch TV or movies. Additionally, the bed frame with the built-in transparent OLED can be independently detached and freely moved anywhere inside the house.
The Metro zone replaces subway car windows with highly transparent OLEDs, allowing passengers to enjoy the outside scenery while checking route maps or local information.
At LG Display's 'Restaurant Zone' showcased at CES 2021, a model is browsing the menu using a transparent OLED.
The Restaurant zone proposes a concept necessary for the contactless era caused by COVID-19. It recreates an environment similar to a sushi bar by installing transparent OLEDs in the space between customers and chefs, serving as partitions while allowing menu viewing, and naturally enabling activities such as watching sports games during ordering and waiting times.
Transparent OLEDs maximize the characteristics of self-emissive panels that do not require backlights, achieving 40% transparency compared to the existing transparent LCD's mere 10%, providing clear and vivid image quality like glass.
Jongseon Park, Executive Vice President of LG Display's Commercial Business Division, stated, "Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED and is seeing increasing demand in various fields such as shopping malls, architectural interiors, autonomous vehicles, and aircraft mobility sectors. It will grow into a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm."
LG Display has held private exhibitions for clients at CES in the past, but this time plans to conduct a public exhibition for general visitors for the first time.
This is part of efforts to discover new businesses related to displays and strengthen open innovation with ventures and startups. Any general visitor can visit the LG Display exhibition hall through the official CES online exhibition site.
