Simmons Bed Obtains Korea's First Patent for 'Flame-Retardant Mattress'

Simmons (CEO Ahn Jung-ho) has obtained the patent for the first-ever "flame-retardant mattress" in Korea. This comes two years after introducing the nation's first and only flame-retardant mattress that resists catching fire in 2018.

Despite the absence of domestic bedroom fire safety standards, Simmons Bed has proactively led the establishment of a bedroom safety culture by developing and launching flame-retardant mattresses and completing patent applications. Simmons is the only mattress company in Korea that produces and sells all general household mattresses as flame-retardant mattresses.

Starting in 2016, Simmons began developing flame-retardant materials and, after over two years of research, introduced a new material called "MAXIMUM SAFETY PADDING," which is resistant to fire and, even if ignited, slowly self-extinguishes. It has met both the international standard (ISO 12949) and the corresponding domestic standard test method (KS F ISO 12949), verifying a high level of fire safety.

According to test results simulating actual fire scenarios (KS F ISO 12949 test) conducted with the Korea Fire Insurance Association’s Disaster Prevention Testing Institute, Simmons’ flame-retardant mattress self-extinguished the flames after one minute. In contrast, a regular mattress produced intense flames along with gray smoke and toxic gases, requiring forced extinguishment after 4 to 7 minutes. The video comparing these tests has garnered over 23 million cumulative views on YouTube, continuously attracting public attention.

Generally, when a fire occurs in a home and flames spread to a mattress, flammable materials combust, accumulating toxic gases and causing an explosion that engulfs the entire interior in flames, a phenomenon known as "Flash Over." Mattresses thus act as a major cause of large-scale fires. Simmons Korea’s flame-retardant mattress prevents fire spread by self-extinguishing, securing a golden time for occupants to evacuate and allowing firefighters to suppress the fire and conduct rescues more safely, thereby preventing large fires. However, fire safety standards related to mattresses in Korea remain insufficient. In contrast, advanced countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada strictly enforce flame-retardant and fireproofing standards for household mattresses by law.

A Simmons representative stated, "Simmons’ flame-retardant mattress greatly helps protect not only occupants but also firefighters engaged in fire suppression," and emphasized, "Going forward, Simmons will continue to lead positive social change by proposing new standards for bedroom safety regulations that have not yet been established in the domestic market and highlighting the importance of safe bedroom environments."

Meanwhile, in addition to flame-retardant mattresses, Simmons Bed has earned the "Radon Safety Product Certification" from the Korea Standards Association for 41 types of general market mattresses and received nationally accredited eco-friendly certification managed by the Ministry of Environment, actively practicing the "Three Major Safety Keywords for National Mattresses" to build consumer trust. Furthermore, Simmons produces safe mattresses at the Simmons Factorium located in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, which boasts a globally recognized domestic production system and a world-class sleep research R&D center. They rigorously manage product quality by applying "1,936 quality control items unique to Simmons Korea."
