[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The Korea Road Traffic Authority announced on the 25th that it has produced a card news guide on how to prepare for the black ice phenomenon, known as the "assassin on the road" during winter.
Black ice refers to the road freezing phenomenon where a thin layer of ice forms on the road surface in winter. When the temperature suddenly drops, snow that had melted on the road refreezes into a thin ice sheet, or black ice forms as exhaust fumes and dust mix with snow and freeze black. Especially when cold weather alternates with warming, the repeated melting and freezing of snow and rain on the road makes black ice formation easier.
Black ice is similar in color to asphalt, making it difficult to recognize and respond to in advance. Extra caution is required at night when visibility is poor, and especially in shaded areas where black ice tends to form easily, such as bridge joints without sunlight, tunnel entrances and exits, and curved roads (curve sections).
To prevent traffic accidents caused by black ice, first check weather forecasts and traffic information, and frequently inspect vehicle conditions such as tire status. While driving, it is important to follow basic safety rules, reduce speed, maintain sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead, avoid sudden acceleration and braking, and operate the steering wheel and pedals smoothly. In particular, when turning corners, reduce speed and adjust it slowly.
A representative from the Korea Road Traffic Authority said, “We produced this card news to provide easier guidance on understanding and properly preparing for icy roads that threaten road safety in winter,” and added, “We hope everyone drives carefully in winter with the mindset of practicing traffic safety starting with themselves.”
