Domestic 5 Electric Vehicle Manufacturers Fully Launching... Preparing 10 Models

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Domestic automakers will continue to capture customer attention with new cars in the new year. In particular, as the future automotive industry rapidly shifts to electric vehicles, competition related to new electric cars is expected to be fiercer than ever.

According to the industry on the 25th, Hyundai Motor Group is making next year the first year of its electric vehicle leap by launching the Ioniq 5, the first model to apply the dedicated platform E-GMP.


The eye-catching feature is the dedicated electric vehicle platform, E-GMP. E-GMP-based electric vehicles can travel over 500 km on a single charge according to domestic standards, and are equipped with an 800V charging system that allows charging up to 80% within 18 minutes when using an ultra-fast charger. Along with the Ioniq 5, Genesis brand’s JW (project name) and Kia Motors’ CV (project name), both utilizing E-GMP, are scheduled to be released next year.


In addition, Hyundai plans to release the successor model to the Starex in the first half of next year, and Kia plans to launch the 3rd generation K7 and the 5th generation Sportage. The new Sportage is expected to have a lineup including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid models.


Also, the Genesis brand’s first electric vehicle, the eG80, is awaiting release. It will be based on the new G80 and equipped with a large-capacity battery pack and a high-performance electric motor.

SsangYong Motor, which recently entered corporate rehabilitation proceedings, is also seeking opportunities with electric vehicles. SsangYong plans to launch the E100, the first domestic electric subcompact sports utility vehicle (SUV), in the first half of next year. The E100 is based on the Korando platform.


SsangYong is currently conducting test drives of the E100. The launch timing will be set in accordance with next year’s government subsidy policies. Additionally, SsangYong has received temporary operation approval for level 3 autonomous driving based on the Korando and started pilot driving on public roads from this month. SsangYong also plans to introduce 2 to 3 models with improved marketability and partial changes.


Korea GM is expected to unveil the new electric vehicle Bolt EUV. The Bolt EUV is the next-generation model of the Bolt EV and is planned as an electric SUV. Along with this, the Chevrolet brand plans to release 4 to 5 completely new and partially updated models.


Renault Samsung Motors, which introduced six new cars this year, plans to continue its launch schedule next year focusing on updated models of existing vehicles.
