SH Corporation Holds 'Public Redevelopment Seminar'... Exploring Utilization Plans for Aging Public Housing

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) explored ways to utilize aging public housing for future housing supply and community-linked spatial welfare facilities in collaboration with experts.

On the 23rd, SH Corporation announced on the 24th that it held an online public redevelopment seminar under the theme "Mid- to Long-term Utilization Plan for Aging Public Housing to Add Resilience to Cities."

At this seminar, Woncheol Lee, head of the Public Redevelopment Project Group at SH Corporation, gave a presentation on the current supply status of public rental housing and the mid- to long-term utilization direction of aging rental housing. The second presenter was Seungjoo Kim, senior researcher at SH Urban Research Institute, who revealed research results on the supply and utilization plans of community-linked spatial welfare facilities through public housing.

Following the keynote presentations, a discussion was held chaired by Professor Yongseung Kim of Hanyang University, with participation from experts including Daesung Kim, director of Urban Insight, Bokseop Song, professor at Hanbat National University, Kyunghoon Lee, professor at Kookmin University, and Kyuhyun Ji, president of the Korean Housing Association. They acknowledged the potential of aging public rental housing and agreed to work together to transform public rental housing from a stigmatized facility into a preferred one, developing aging rental redevelopment projects into a new paradigm for public housing and advancing them into concrete policies and projects.

Se-yong Kim, president of SH Corporation, emphasized, "SH Corporation is moving beyond housing construction and welfare service-centered supply to provide living services at the regional and urban levels and community-linked spatial welfare facilities, aiming to improve residents' quality of life and regional value. Now, we will transform aging public housing into urban residential complex hubs that can revitalize communities."

Bu-seong Kang, president of the Architectural Institute of Korea, stated, "It is urgent to discuss resolving social exclusion caused by negative perceptions of rental complexes and improving the quality of residence. I hope that this seminar will produce ways to seek community development based on aging public housing."

Meanwhile, the "Public Redevelopment Online Seminar" will also be available online through SH Corporation's YouTube channel "Cheongsinho TV" and the Architectural Institute of Korea's YouTube channel "Architecture TV."
