Coupang Officially Enters OTT Business with Launch of 'Coupang Play'

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheolhyun] E-commerce company Coupang has officially launched its new online video service (OTT) as a new business. The video streaming service is offered as a benefit for Coupang’s membership subscribers. Coupang Wow membership members can enjoy unlimited popular movies, domestic and international TV series, and various video content anytime and anywhere without additional costs. With plans for original productions in the future, it is expected to have a significant impact on both the e-commerce and OTT industries.

On the 24th, Coupang announced the launch of 'Coupang Play,' a video streaming service that the whole family can enjoy together. Coupang Play is a service for members subscribed to Coupang’s Wow membership. It can be used with only the monthly membership fee of 2,900 KRW without any additional charges. By downloading the Coupang Play app and linking it with the Coupang app, users can start using the service immediately without a separate registration process. Currently, the official Android version app is available for download on the Google Play Store, and iOS, tablet PC, smart TV, and PC versions will be released sequentially.

To allow customers to enjoy videos according to their preferences, Coupang has expanded the range of choices. According to Coupang, users can easily and conveniently enjoy a variety of content including movies, popular domestic and international dramas and entertainment shows, documentaries, current affairs and culture, animation, language learning, and entrance exam lectures. The service offers various Hollywood movies such as the 'Original Spider-Man series' and 'Bombshell,' popular domestic entertainment shows like 'Delicious Guys' and 'My Golden Kids,' as well as educational content from YBM and Daekyo. In the future, differentiated content from other OTT services, such as the latest American TV series starring Bryan Cranston, 'Your Honor,' and educational news content 'CNN10,' will be released sequentially.

Coupang Play allows up to five profiles to be created under one account. Family members can search for and receive recommendations for content tailored to their tastes through different profiles. Additionally, to promote proper viewing habits for children, the service includes a Kids Mode that gathers child and youth content in one place, along with a password input feature. Most of the content on Coupang Play can be downloaded for viewing anytime and anywhere. Users can spend time with pre-downloaded videos even during long trips or in places with unstable internet connections.
