According to the friend who traveled with her, Maria did not consume any food except for two cups of coffee she drank two days before the vacation.

Maria, who had about 150,000 followers, revealed on social media (SNS) during her lifetime that she was fighting anorexia nervosa and shared her thoughts about the disorder with others. She also showed a strong will to overcome anorexia.

Maria said, "Anorexia is not a matter of weight but a matter of thought," adding, "For anorexia patients, resisting the desire to be thin and gaining weight is a very difficult battle."

She encouraged anorexia patients, saying, "I want to tell everyone who doubts themselves (about gaining weight) that you are good enough. If you fight hard chasing your dreams, you will be rewarded."

A few days before her death, Maria confessed her fear of dying from an eating disorder, saying, "I don't want to be one of the 1 in 10 who die from anorexia." However, she ultimately passed away due to anorexia.

After Maria's passing, her Instagram was filled with condolence messages such as "Your family will always be by your side," "I can't believe it," and "My angel. I miss you so much."
