[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Kim Jeong-seon, Executive Vice President of Dongseo University, was appointed as the 6th president at the 33rd Board of Directors meeting of the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES) held on December 19. The term is three years.

INWES is a non-profit organization registered in Canada that cooperates with UNESCO and serves as an advisory body to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It engages in international cooperation and exchange activities for women engineers and scientists in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

It has over 250,000 members from more than 60 countries worldwide and was founded in 2002 with the vision of creating a better world through the participation and activities of women engineers and scientists.

Due to COVID-19, INWES held its general assembly online on November 21 this year. After electing 18 directors from 17 countries through member voting, Kim Jeong-seon was appointed president at the board meeting on December 19.

Member organizations of INWES include over 50 women engineers and scientists’ organizations and universities, including the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) of the UK, founded in 1919 as the world’s first women’s engineering society.

Korea has been actively involved since the founding of INWES through the Korean Women Scientists and Engineers (KWSE) and Dongseo University, which joined as a member organization in 2011.
