[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) announced on the 22nd that the Gayong District and Gunnae District have been designated as priority management areas for sewer maintenance by the Ministry of Environment to resolve the habitual flooding damage in Wando-eup, and flood prevention projects are being promoted.

Recently, due to localized heavy rains caused by climate change and rising sea levels, lowlands reclaimed decades ago have been experiencing habitual flooding damage.

Accordingly, the county selected the Gayong District as a priority management area for sewer maintenance in 2014, and after starting the basic and detailed design service in 2016, construction officially began in January last year.

A total project cost of 22 billion KRW is being invested, with the installation of 10.08 km of stormwater drainage pipes such as culverts, 358 rainwater inlets, 4 drainage gate maintenance sites, and 1 drainage pumping station. The project is being promoted with the goal of completion next year, and currently, the stormwater drainage pipe construction is underway.

A county official stated, “Since excavation and restoration work is being carried out on roads with heavy traffic, noise, vibration, and inconvenience to traffic are inevitable,” adding, “We ask for residents’ understanding and plan to expedite the completion date as much as possible.”

Additionally, separately from the Gayong District, the Gunnae District, a habitual flooding area, was also designated as a priority management area for sewer maintenance last September.

The Gunnae District is also a reclaimed lowland area where seawater flows back through drainage pipes during high tide, and flooding damage frequently occurs due to heavy rains and typhoon invasions.

A total project cost of 25.1 billion KRW is being invested, with the improvement of 7.2 km of drainage pipes and the installation of 2 rainwater pumping stations in the Gunnae-ri area.

With the completion of the Gunnae District flood prevention project in 2024, Wando-eup is expected to be completely free from habitual flooding.

Shin Woo-cheol, Governor of Wando-gun, said, “We expect that the expansion of sewer facilities will greatly improve the living environment conditions of local residents, and we will make every effort to ensure that the flood prevention project proceeds without any setbacks.”
