KOICA Establishes $5.83 Million Technical College in Egypt
Creating Jobs for Egyptian Youth and Securing Future Workforce for Korean Companies
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the 21st (local time) with Samsung Electronics Egypt Production Corporation (SEEG-P) and the Korea-Egypt Technical University at the 1st anniversary opening ceremony of the Korea-Egypt Technical University located in Beni Suef.
The MOU was attended by Hong Jin-wook, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt, Khaled Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education of Egypt, and Hani Gonem, Governor of Beni Suef, Egypt.
Through this MOU, Samsung Electronics Egypt Production Corporation will provide an internship program to 20 students starting next year, and the technical university will select and manage students who meet the internship participation criteria. KOICA plans to support the establishment of a Korean Language Center within the university and dispatch experts for workforce training. Furthermore, Samsung Electronics, the technical university, and KOICA agreed to continuously improve the school curriculum and internship program through regular evaluations.
At the request of the Egyptian government, KOICA has been promoting the establishment project of the Korea-Egypt Technical University in Beni Suef since 2016, with a scale of 5.83 million USD, aiming to provide high-quality higher technical education and contribute to youth job creation.
Oh Yeon-geum, Director of KOICA Egypt Office, said, "From selecting departments to developing curricula and operating the school, we are continuously striving to establish technical education suited to the Egyptian context based on Korea’s experience together with our project partner, Korea University of Technology and Education." She added, "For the sustainable development of the school, building partnerships with companies along with quality education is essential, and participating companies must be able to secure excellent talent. We will make this project a mutually beneficial endeavor between the two countries."
Kwon Chun-gi, Head of Samsung Electronics Egypt Production Corporation, said, "This MOU expresses Samsung Electronics’ commitment to nurturing talent in Egypt, pursuing coexistence, and creating greater value." He added, "As a global company, we will strive to continue developing our business activities in Egypt by delivering good value with good products."
Hong Jin-wook, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt, stated, "At a time when the two countries are forming new partnerships for the future, it is very meaningful that excellent students who studied at the university have the opportunity for future employment through internships at our companies via the MOU between Samsung Electronics and the technical university."
Meanwhile, the Korea-Egypt Technical University is a four-year professional college that opened in September 2019 and is now in its second year. The Egyptian government is planning to expand the technical university project to other regions of Egypt using this project as a model.
