Songpa-gu Talent Development Scholarship Foundation Provides 75 Million KRW in Scholarships to 62 Recipients in the Second Half... Total of 141 Recipients Received 160 Million KRW in 2020... Largest Scale in 10 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) announced on the 22nd that the Songpa-gu Talent Development Scholarship Foundation, a public institution established by the district, will select 62 scholarship recipients in the second half of 2020 and provide a total of 75 million KRW in scholarships.
To discover and nurture local talent, the district established the Songpa Scholarship Foundation (Chairman Moon Yun-hwan) in 1994. Every year, scholarships are awarded to high school and university students residing in the area who are financially disadvantaged or have outstanding academic performance or special talents, selected in both the first and second halves of the year.
This time, after receiving recommendations from neighborhood chiefs and school principals between September 23 and October 7, the foundation's board of directors conducted a review and finally selected 62 students. Each of the 41 high school students will receive 1 million KRW, and the 21 university students will receive up to 2 million KRW in scholarships.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the district delivered the scholarship certificates individually to the students through non-face-to-face methods.
Moon Yun-hwan, Chairman of the Songpa-gu Talent Development Scholarship Foundation, stated, “We will continue to strengthen our support by implementing various scholarship programs so that Songpa-gu students can grow into global talents.”
This year, the district selected a total of 141 scholarship recipients and provided scholarships amounting to 160 million KRW. This is the largest support scale in the past 10 years, thanks to a significant increase in scholarship funds compared to the previous year to help students facing economic difficulties due to COVID-19.
Additionally, in cooperation with the Namgung & Kang Memorial Foundation, with which an MOU was signed in 2014, a total of 10 million KRW in scholarships was awarded to 11 students.
The district is responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, while the foundation manages the scholarship support.
Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “Although everyone is facing difficulties due to COVID-19, we will spare no effort to support students so they can freely nurture their dreams for the future,” adding, “We will continue to work closely with the scholarship foundation to further foster talent in Songpa.”
