Seodaemun-gu Collaborates with Animal Protection Groups to Manage Stray Cats in Residential Areas

Seodaemun-gu Collaborates with Animal Protection Groups to Manage Stray Cats in Residential Areas

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) is collaborating with private animal protection organizations to reduce residents' inconvenience caused by stray cats in residential areas and to raise awareness about animal protection.

On the morning of the 21st, the district office signed a "Mutual Cooperation Agreement on the Operation of Public Feeding Stations for Stray Cats" with the Seodaemun-gu Stray Cat Companion Headquarters (Representative Jo Eun-young), a cat protection organization, and Good Animals (Representative Jang Jae-hong), an animal shelter organization, at the mayor's office.

According to the agreement, Good Animals will provide Seodaemun-gu with 10 steel feeding facilities for stray cats designed by designer Jang Byung-in and 120kg of cat food free of charge.

The Seodaemun-gu Stray Cat Companion Headquarters (Seodonghaeng) will be responsible for supplying food and water at the feeding stations, maintaining cleanliness around the area, educating volunteers (cat moms), and monitoring the operation of the feeding stations and the stray cat neutering project.

Seodaemun-gu will install public feeding stations for stray cats and promote a stray cat neutering (TNR) project to control the population. TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, and Return, which means capturing stray cats, performing neutering surgery, and then releasing them back to their original location.

The locations for the public feeding stations will be selected through consultation between the district and Seodonghaeng, ensuring no concerns about complaints, ease of monitoring, and safety for the stray cats.

Previously, the district had already installed public feeding facilities for stray cats at 10 locations on its own.

Additionally, this month, it was selected as a recipient of POSCO Construction's "Local Government Animal Protection Project Support," and plans to place feeding stations at 9 locations.

With the 10 additional locations from this agreement, it is expected that 29 public feeding stations for stray cats will be operated within Seodaemun-gu next year.

Mayor Moon Seok-jin of Seodaemun-gu said, "Through cooperation between the district and private organizations, we hope to spread a culture where people and animals coexist peacefully and resolve residents' inconveniences such as damage to garbage bags."

Meanwhile, the district is considering establishing a dedicated animal policy team next year to actively reflect various residents' opinions on companion animals in district administration. It also plans to promote online and offline education and campaigns to improve awareness of companion animals and establish a proper companion culture.
