[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Singer Sunmi, formerly of the group Wonder Girls, confessed that she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder five years ago.
On the 16th episode of Mnet's 'Running Between,' Sunmi spoke about her situation at the time she left Wonder Girls.
Sunmi said, "The time I took a break was when I left Wonder Girls. Back then, my heart hurt more than my body. After debuting as a solo artist, resuming activities with Wonder Girls, and leaving the company, I was given a lot of time to think."
She especially revealed, "I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder five years ago. It kept tormenting me. Fortunately, after the diagnosis, I received treatment and took medication, so I got better."
Borderline personality disorder refers to an abnormal personality characterized by very unstable and fluctuating emotions, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships, leading to severe mood swings.
Sunmi continued, "I need to solve the fundamental issues for the people around me to feel comfortable. Because of borderline personality disorder, people around me were having a hard time," adding, "I hope everyone around me is happy and that no one suffers because of me."
She then said tearfully, "I want to give love. But isn't that desire coming from my wish to be loved? I think I really should have stopped at that time."
Sunmi said, "I debuted too early and started social life. Our identity is formed during adolescence, but didn't we spend that time inside a car? Now, I have reduced the medication a lot, so there is no need to worry."
