[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The autonomous protection system is being reorganized to ensure voluntary personal information protection in industries providing online and offline services closely related to citizens' daily lives, such as medical care, academies, transportation, and internet shopping.

The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 17th the launch of the Self-Regulation Council, which combines the management organizations of personal information protection self-regulatory bodies that were previously divided into online and offline industries.

Previously, personal information self-protection was overseen by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for offline industries and the Korea Communications Commission for online industries. The newly established Self-Regulation Council will manage and operate 19 self-regulatory bodies currently active.

Specifically, it will conduct reviews for designating new self-regulatory bodies, perform annual performance evaluations, and review self-regulatory agreements to support the industry's voluntary personal information protection activities.

The Self-Regulation Council consists of 13 members: five private expert members with a two-year term and eight ex officio members who are director-level officials in charge of personal information protection tasks from various government ministries. The chairperson is Professor Kim Min-ho of Sungkyunkwan University School of Law, selected from the private members.

The Personal Information Protection Commission plans to build a self-regulation governance system by starting with the formation of this council and establishing a federation of self-regulatory bodies that comprehensively supports self-regulatory organizations across various industries.
