Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Noh Hyun-song) installed the 'Gangseo Hope Message Board' on the outer wall of Gangseo District Public Deungbit Library, delivering hope and inspiration to residents through warm phrases.

The district planned the hope message board so that residents could take a moment of leisure and receive warm comfort from the phrases they encounter by chance.

Also, to use the hope message board as a communication channel with residents, the district held the ‘Deungbit Library Gangseo Hope Message Board Phrase Contest’ last August, inviting submissions of ‘original phrases that give hope and inspiration to local residents.’

The winning entry, posted as the first message on the Gangseo Hope Message Board, is ‘May the book you open beautifully unfold your life.’

The winner, Mr. Jeon??, said he applied because he wanted to convey the message that one can discover the path of life through reading.

The winning work was selected as the first post on the Gangseo Hope Message Board because it warmly welcomes visitors to the library and encourages residents who happen to see the phrase to want to visit the library.

The district plans to hold the hope message board phrase contest twice a year on various themes to publicly share beautiful phrases filled with residents’ hearts on the hope message board.

Next year, the district also plans to install an additional hope message board at one more public library so that more residents can see hopeful messages.

A district official said, “Although public libraries temporarily stopped operating to prevent the spread of COVID-19, they have been refurbished with the hope message board and are waiting for residents. We hope residents who visit the library again will smile when they see the Gangseo Hope Message Board.”

A total of 190 works were submitted to the ‘Deungbit Library Gangseo Hope Message Board Phrase Contest’ held last August, and after review by the Hope Message Board Selection Committee, one winning entry and one runner-up were selected.

The runner-up, following the winning entry, was Mr. Jang○○’s ‘The light of the lantern that is only seen late after falling into a dark swamp,’ which received praise for expressing a hopeful message given by light during difficult and hard times, reflecting the light of Deungbit Library.
