[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The SeAH Haeam Academic Scholarship Foundation announced on the 15th that it has additionally selected 100 university students as scholarship recipients who are struggling to pay tuition fees due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The SeAH Haeam Academic Scholarship Foundation held a regular board meeting last month and unanimously passed a supplementary budget plan that includes providing a total of 100 million KRW in scholarships to students facing difficulties in paying tuition fees due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
The scholarship recipients were selected from 30 universities nationwide in consultation with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and the Korea Hana Foundation, prioritizing income level and urgency of support. Among the selected students, 60 are engineering majors, 30 are children of deceased soldiers, police officers, and firefighters, and 10 are children of North Korean defectors. Each will receive a one-time scholarship of 1 million KRW in December.
Additionally, starting next year, the SeAH Haeam Academic Scholarship Foundation plans to expand the regular scholarship recipients to include 10 children of deceased soldiers, police officers, and firefighters, 5 children of North Korean defectors, and 5 children from multicultural families annually, and continue providing scholarships.
Lee Soon-hyung, Chairman of the SeAH Haeam Academic Scholarship Foundation, said to the scholarship recipients, "I believe all scholarship students have the qualities and potential to become future leaders," and added, "Although the confusion caused by COVID-19 is significant, I hope each student overcomes it wisely from their own position and grows even more."
Meanwhile, as part of social distancing measures, the scholarship certificate presentation and scholarship system orientation were conducted through a non-face-to-face online video channel. In June, the SeAH Haeam Academic Scholarship Foundation also selected 35 students as the 28th regular scholarship recipients, increasing the number by 10 from the previous year due to concerns about household difficulties caused by COVID-19. The foundation supports regular scholarship recipients with full payment of tuition fees for two years and living expenses.
