[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province, expressed its welcome on the 8th (Korean time) at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) online board meeting for adopting Breaking as an official Olympic sport.

On the 15th, Jang Deokcheon, mayor of Bucheon, said, "As a result of the joint efforts of the B-boy team 'Jinjo Crew,' who are cultural ambassadors of Bucheon City, and Bucheon City, Breaking has been adopted as an official Olympic sport. We will continue to show great interest and support."

Breaking, also called B-boying or break dance, is a dance sport where B-boys compete one-on-one to determine the winner.

Based on the successful demonstration at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires, Breaking will be included as an official sport starting from the 2024 Paris Olympics. This Youth Olympics was significant as 'Jinjo Crew' led the delegation and won a bronze medal.

Since 2012, Bucheon City has promoted itself as the "Mecca of B-boying," implementing various programs and hosting domestic and international competitions.

Starting with the Bucheon National B-boy Competition in 2014, from 2016 onward, the 'Bucheon World B-boy Championship (BBIC),' the only world competition in Korea loved by B-boys worldwide, has been held annually. This achievement was accomplished together with Jinjo Crew, who have dominated the world's top five major competitions and maintained the world ranking No. 1.

Especially, despite the impact of COVID-19, the 5th Bucheon World B-boy Championship was safely held online through cooperation between Bucheon City and Jinjo Crew, earning high praise from B-boys around the world.

Kim Heonjun, leader of Jinjo Crew, who played a major role in Breaking's adoption as an official Olympic sport, said, "The adoption of Breaking as an official sport was already expected," and added, "We will do our best to achieve good results at the 2024 Paris Olympics."
