Suspected Act of Russian Hackers
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Following the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Department of Commerce, it has been revealed that the Department of Homeland Security's internal network was also hacked, apparently by a group backed by the Russian government.
On the 14th (local time), a major foreign media outlet cited sources reporting that a hacker team supported by the Russian government succeeded in accessing the Department of Homeland Security's internal network.
The Department of Homeland Security is responsible not only for border security but also for cybersecurity. It also handles tasks related to the distribution of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines.
The day before, it was revealed that hackers believed to be cooperating with the Russian government had infiltrated the email systems of the Treasury Department and the Department of Commerce, sparking controversy.
The Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C. issued a statement denying the allegations, calling them "baseless attempts by the U.S. media to blame Russia for hacking U.S. government agencies."
