[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The unveiling of the Galaxy S21 is just one month away. For the first time in the S series, the Galaxy S21 Ultra model will feature the S Pen. Instead of a slot to insert the S Pen, a case that can carry the S Pen will be released.

According to IT specialist media WinFuture and others on the 11th (local time), Samsung Electronics will support the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and provide a case that can store the S Pen together. Although there is no slot to insert the S Pen in the Ultra model, a silicone cover and a Clear View cover with S Pen storage space will be released together. XDA Developers explained, "The case will be an essential item for consumers purchasing the S Pen for the Galaxy S21 Ultra."

Case Supporting S Pen Storage... Note Discontinuation Uncertain

It is highly likely that Samsung Electronics will offer the S Pen for the Galaxy S21 Ultra as an accessory to be purchased separately rather than providing it as a standard feature. Since providing the S Pen as standard with the Ultra model could raise concerns about price increases, they seem to have chosen to sell it separately. Apple also maintained a similar pricing policy when launching the 5G iPhone, and the price of the Galaxy S20 was a barrier to sales, so the intention was to minimize factors that could increase the price. The S Pen was included as standard with the Galaxy Note series and sold separately for 40,000 KRW.

Although rumors about the discontinuation of the Note series have been continuously raised, it cannot be ruled out that it will be released until this year. Samsung Electronics’ support of the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 series is interpreted as an attempt to dilute the unique feature of the Note series and naturally guide loyal Note customers to the S series. To popularize foldable smartphones and increase sales, the proportion of the Note series needs to be reduced.

The Galaxy S21 will be released in 6.2 inches, the Galaxy S21+ in 6.7 inches, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra model in 6.8 inches. The Galaxy S21 and Plus models are expected to support FHD+ displays, while the Ultra model will support WQHD+ displays. In particular, the Ultra model supports S Pen input functionality that was only available on the Galaxy Note, but the other models lack digitizer input functionality, making S Pen use difficult. All three models support a 120Hz refresh rate.

The Ultra model will have four cameras, while the S21 and Plus models will have three cameras. The Galaxy S21 and Plus models will be equipped with a 64MP telephoto camera and 12MP main and ultra-wide cameras. The Ultra model will have four cameras and a laser autofocus (AF) sensor. It includes a 108MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and two 10x zoom telephoto cameras (10MP each). LED flash and autofocus sensors are also included. The front camera maintains a punch-hole design.

The Galaxy S21 will be equipped with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 888 chipset. Snapdragon chipsets are expected to be used in Korea, the United States, and China, while the Exynos 2100 chipset will be used in other regions. The Snapdragon 888 chipset is a flagship chipset integrated with a 5G modem, offering 25% better CPU performance and 35% improved graphics rendering compared to the Snapdragon 865. RAM is expected to be 8GB for the Galaxy S21 and 12GB for the Plus and Ultra models.

Color options for the S21 are expected to be Phantom Pink, Violet, Gray, and White; for the S21+, Violet, Silver, and Black; and for the Ultra, Silver and Black. Battery capacities are ▲ Galaxy S21 4000mAh ▲ S21+ 4800mAh ▲ S21 Ultra 5000mAh. Samsung Electronics plans to unveil the Galaxy S21 series through an online unpacking event in mid-January next year.
