[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 11th, Lee Gang-deok, mayor of Pohang, visited the construction site of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) campus to check the progress of the construction.
On this day, Mayor Lee listened to explanations about the construction status and discussed current issues with IBS Deputy Director Ha Sung-do, Construction Promotion Support TF Team Leader, POSTECH President Kim Moo-hwan and related personnel, and the site manager.
The IBS POSTECH campus construction project, with a budget of 61 billion KRW, is being carried out to provide research space for three IBS campus research groups located at POSTECH (Complex Systems Self-Assembly Research Group, Geometric Mathematical Physics Research Group, Atomic Control Low-Dimensional Electron Systems Research Group). The building will be constructed on a 17,000㎡ site with one basement floor and four above-ground floors, and is scheduled to be completed in April 2022.
Mayor Lee Gang-deok of Pohang said, "Pohang is an optimal location for basic science research as it has research institutions in the basic science field such as the Max Planck Korea/POSTECH Research Center, the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, as well as research facilities like the synchrotron accelerator and excellent personnel," adding, "I hope that not only the current three POSTECH research groups but also research groups in various fields such as life sciences and earth sciences will be established in Pohang."
Meanwhile, IBS, located in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, is an institution that provides human and material support so that researchers can focus on long-term, large-scale, and collective basic science research without pressure for immediate results. It was established in November 2011. Currently, IBS operates 31 basic science research groups nationwide, including the Daejeon headquarters, campus research groups (science and technology specialized universities), and external research groups (general universities), conducting research in physics, chemistry, mathematics, life sciences, and other basic science fields.
