Hyundai Mobis Acquires Otron Semiconductor Business... "Securing Vehicle Semiconductor Development Capabilities"

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Mobis is acquiring the semiconductor business division of Hyundai Autron to secure development capabilities in the automotive semiconductor sector. This decision is based on the judgment that securing competitiveness in semiconductor technology is essential to gain a technological edge in future vehicle fields such as eco-friendly cars and autonomous vehicles.

On the morning of the 11th, Hyundai Mobis announced that its board of directors approved the acquisition of Hyundai Autron's semiconductor business division for 133.2 billion KRW. Following the board's approval, Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Autron signed a transfer contract for the development personnel and related assets of the semiconductor business division.

Through this acquisition, Hyundai Mobis expects to enhance its specialized design, development, and verification capabilities for automotive semiconductors, enabling it to secure differentiated integrated control technology in the future vehicle electronics sector. In particular, the strategy is to internalize core technologies of system and power semiconductors early to further advance these capabilities while strengthening competitiveness in the next-generation high-performance semiconductor field.

First, Hyundai Mobis plans to develop semiconductors and integrated controller systems suitable for future vehicle technologies that require highly precise control and supply them to complete vehicles. To this end, collaboration among semiconductor design teams, control system development teams, and software development teams will be strengthened.

Previously, since controller specification development and semiconductor development were conducted separately, there were limitations in developing semiconductors optimized for systems and in quality verification capabilities. However, by integrating semiconductor and controller development at the system level going forward, synergy between semiconductor design and control system development can be maximized. Strengthening close collaboration among R&D organizations is also for this reason.

Additionally, Hyundai Mobis plans to reinforce its development capabilities in the existing automotive semiconductor field and focus on developing system semiconductors, power semiconductors, and high-performance semiconductors. This is because, as future vehicle fields such as autonomous driving and electrification advance, semiconductor performance increasingly determines controller competitiveness, and semiconductor demand grows significantly. A Hyundai Mobis official explained, "We plan to showcase differentiated technological competitiveness in the future vehicle sector by enhancing semiconductor development capabilities alongside existing hardware and software technology capabilities."
