Disney Plus "Entering Korea Next Year"... Domestic OTT Market Shake-up Expected

Disney Plus "Entering Korea Next Year"... Domestic OTT Market Shake-up Expected

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Walt Disney's online video service (OTT) 'Disney Plus' will launch its service in South Korea next year.

Walt Disney Company officially announced at the 'Investor Day' event held on the 10th (local time) that Disney Plus will be introduced in 2021 in South Korea, Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, and other regions.

Disney Plus began its service last November in the United States, Canada, and other countries. This year, it expanded its launch countries to Australia, New Zealand, some European countries, India, Japan, and more.

According to Disney, the current global cumulative number of Disney Plus subscribers reaches 86.8 million. Disney also announced that over the next several years, it will release 10 Marvel series and 10 Star Wars series through Disney Plus.

Currently, the domestic OTT market is structured with competition between the global number one operator Netflix and native platforms such as Wavve, TVING, Watcha, and Season. If Disney Plus, which has excellent original content competitiveness in movies and animation, joins, the competition to attract paid subscribers between global operators and native operators in the domestic OTT market is expected to become even more intense.
