New Solutions for Talent Development at Universities in Busan Region
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Companies and universities in the Busan area are engaging in talent education through the ‘CULT (Consortium of Universities for Local Talented)’ program, a regional talent development university consortium of Dongseo University (President Jang Je-guk) LINC+ Project Group.
The CULT program is a platform-type field education system that fosters local talent through the sharing of specialized capabilities of participating universities and practical industry experience, providing a shared university-style education.
Students participating from each university receive education that combines theory and practice through PBL classes, seminars, special lectures, and field trips.
This year, programs in two fields, Architectural Design (Archi-CULT) and Fashion Design (Fashion-CULT), are being operated.
The Archi-CULT program (led by Professor Oh Ki-hwan of Dongseo University) involves 10 universities in Busan (Kyungsung University, Dongmyung University, Dongseo University, Dong-A University, Dong-Eui University, Pukyong National University, Pusan National University, Silla University, Inje University, Korea Maritime and Ocean University) and 24 related companies (including Hanmi Architects & Engineers).
It operated a ‘Industry-Academia-Government Joint Education Program for Training Architectural Experts in the Post-COVID-19 Era in the Busan Region’ targeting over 320 students.
This program promoted various field-integrated education such as non-face-to-face international workshops, creative convergence future-oriented architectural technical education, and urban architectural explorations.
Through the program, 10 teams and 34 students participated in the ‘2020 Busan Architecture Festival International Idea Competition (BCOME),’ and achieved the distinction of being the only students to win 3rd place (Jeon Jong-wook and 4 others) competing against professional architects.
The Fashion-CULT program (led by Professor Noh Yoon-sun of Dongseo University) involves 8 universities (Kyungsung University, Dongmyung University, Dongseo University, Dong-A University, Dong-Eui University, Pusan National University, Silla University, Busan Gyeongsang University) and 7 institutions (including Busan Economic Promotion Agency) and companies (including Bebe & Vino), operating 8 detailed programs for about 350 major students.
Production education focused on ‘Sustainable Fashion Design Using Zero Waste’ and ‘Fashion Film Production.’ The program’s outputs participated in the opening fashion show of the university fashion festival.
They also achieved results such as uploading video works set against famous Busan landmarks on the ‘2020 Korea-ASEAN Fashion Week’ website.
The CULT program is an educational curriculum newly attempted in 2020 by Dongseo University LINC+ Project Group, aiming to contribute to regional industrial development through fostering local talent by consolidating the region’s uniqueness and the universities’ capabilities.
Jo Dae-su, head of Dongseo University LINC+ Project Group, said, “The CULT program is a starting point for shared universities and will lead field-based education through cooperation between local universities and industry. We plan to continue expanding infrastructure such as IFS, which is being established as an untact era education system.”
