This reliable model carries the heavy responsibility of SsangYong's business normalization. My first impression upon seeing the All New Rexton was, 'SsangYong has really sharpened its edge.' The design has changed dramatically, and the driving experience has been significantly upgraded. I personally experienced the remarkably transformed Rexton while driving around Yeongjongdo, Incheon.
A Strong and Confident Design Emphasizing 'SsangYong Identity'
The G4 Rexton, launched in 2017, had a moderate design. While it was not particularly off-putting, over time it was often considered 'old-fashioned.' The All New Rexton has solved this issue by embracing 'SsangYong identity.'
The All New Rexton is strong and confident. The test vehicle was the 'The Black' version of the All New Rexton. SsangYong, a traditional powerhouse in the SUV segment, has modernized the classic SUV sensibility through the All New Rexton.
The front grille, shaped like a diamond, protrudes to express a solid and sturdy image. The headlamps and daytime running lights have become sharper. Especially, 'The Black' emphasizes strength with its deep black color. It evokes the classic SUV feel reminiscent of the Musso.
The interior features premium Nappa leather seats and quilted door trims, providing a luxurious yet youthful atmosphere. The 12.3-inch full digital cluster instrument panel is flashy and delivers a variety of information.
As a 'family SUV,' special attention was given to the second row. The seatback reclines up to 139 degrees, and there are two USB ports and a 12V power outlet for rear passengers. The rear passenger conversation mode and sleep mode were also impressive. Through the driver's seat microphone, comfortable conversations with the second row are possible, and the rear speaker output is limited to allow for restful sleep.
The trunk has a basic cargo capacity of 820 liters. It can accommodate up to four golf bags horizontally, and there is still room left after placing a twin stroller and two standard suitcases. Folding down the rear seats increases the capacity to 1,977 liters, more than doubling the space, allowing for large cargo without any problem.
Solid Driving Feel with Various Convenience Features
Pressing the accelerator, the initial response is not very nimble, but the heavy torque provides stable movement. Although the curb weight exceeds 2 tons, it can tow up to 3 tons, so there is no sense of lacking power. The All New Rexton is equipped with the same displacement 2.2-liter diesel engine as the previous model. However, the maximum output increased from 187 horsepower to 202 horsepower, a 15-horsepower boost, and the maximum torque improved from 42.8 kg·m to 45.0 kg·m, an increase of 2.2 kg·m.
The handling was also satisfying, thanks to the rack-type (R-EPS) steering system. Another advantage is the fully equipped advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which was considered a limitation in the hydraulic steering system of the G4 Rexton.
The All New Rexton features Deep Control, an advanced driving safety assistance system including Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (IACC).
It also has a 'Trailer Sway Control' function that detects trailer movement and controls driving force and braking. Additionally, the AI-based connected car system 'Infocon' has been newly installed. It includes engine start, climate control operation, remote control, security, and entertainment services utilizing streaming content. In short, it has everything that can be included.
The All New Rexton retains the frame-on-body structure (a body mounted on a frame). The frame body is a structure where steel supports the lower body, optimized to prevent body twisting. It is ideal for off-road and towing as it resists damage even under strong shocks on rugged terrain or unpaved roads. However, the high body height can be inconvenient when getting in and out. The All New Rexton The Black improves this inconvenience by automatically deploying a hidden step when the door is opened.
The All New Rexton is a vehicle optimized for family-centered leisure activities. The tough frame body, confident design, and enhanced convenience features for families were satisfying.
The selling prices are 36.95 million KRW for the Luxury trim, 41.75 million KRW for Prestige, and 49.75 million KRW for the special model The Black.
