Pintel to Build 'AI Coastal Surveillance System' for Ministry of National Defense

[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] Fintel, a video analysis specialist company, is undertaking the Ministry of National Defense's project to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) integrated coastal surveillance system.

According to Fintel on the 8th, the company won the project led by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) and will carry out the project until December this year.

NIPA provides coastal surveillance-related data held by the Ministry of National Defense for AI training purposes and supports project costs necessary for AI technology development and system construction.

In the future, the project plans to link with the Ministry of National Defense's coastal scientific surveillance project and expand the technology implementation to all coastal outposts of the Army.

Since several national security-threatening incidents, such as the defection of a North Korean boat at Samcheok Port in June last year, have occurred regarding coastal surveillance, public interest in this project is also high.

The core project of the Fintel consortium this year is to build an integrated system combining video AI, signal AI, and operational software. Next year, the focus will be on improving recognition rates and establishing an AI cloud.

Through this project, the Ministry of National Defense expects to efficiently operate military personnel by reallocating existing coastal surveillance forces using AI technology and apply it to surveillance CCTVs at domestic and international security facilities.

Kim Dong-gi, CEO of Fintel, stated, "Based on large-scale defense data, we will contribute to strengthening South Korea's defense competitiveness through the successful establishment of the next-generation AI integrated coastal surveillance system using cutting-edge AI technology."

Meanwhile, the government officially launched the Korean Digital New Deal project in July. Among the ten representative tasks of the Korean New Deal project, AI+X (industrial convergence) projects applying core Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, ICT, and big data across domestic industries are increasing.
