Gangdong-gu Wins Minister of Gender Equality and Family Award for Outstanding Youth Participation Committee Case

Highly Praised for Producing COVID-19 Prevention Videos and Supporting Local Community Activities

2020 Seoul Metropolitan Government Youth Participation Organization Policy Proposal Contest 'Grand Prize' Winner

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has been selected as an excellent institution for COVID-19 prevention activities in the ‘2020 Youth Participation Committee Best Practices Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and will receive the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Award.

This contest aims to discover, award, and encourage excellent cases of local youth participation committees, and to promote youth participation activities and the spread of best practices.

It was conducted targeting youth participation committees of cities, provinces, and districts nationwide. Due to the elevation to social distancing level 2 for COVID-19, a separate awards ceremony will not be held.

Gangdong-gu received high evaluations for activities such as ‘Producing videos on how to play safely in preparation for COVID-19,’ ‘Making and sharing support snacks for merchants in nearby traditional markets,’ and ‘Gifting healing flowerpots and support cards for local small business owners’ in the newly added innovation leading field this year.

Previously, the district’s Youth Participation Committee won the grand prize, the Seoul Mayor’s Award, at the ‘2020 Seoul Metropolitan City Youth Participation Organization Policy Proposal Contest’ last month for the project titled ‘Establishing Gangdong Smart Youth Zone through the voices of youth,’ achieving excellent results consecutively.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “Amid the difficulties caused by COVID-19, I give great applause to the Youth Participation Committee for planning and carrying out various activities from the position of youth for the members of the local community,” and added, “We will continue to make efforts to actively reflect the opinions of youth in district administration.”

Meanwhile, the Gangdong-gu Youth Participation Committee is a youth participation organization established and operated under the ‘Ordinance on the Formation and Operation of the Gangdong-gu Youth Participation Committee, Seoul Special City,’ and is entrusted to operate at the district-run Gangdong Youth Nuri Center, a youth-friendly facility.
