Japan to Conduct First Joint Unmanned Island Training in East China Sea with US and France Next Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Seong Giho] Japanese media reported on the 6th that Japan will conduct joint exercises next year for the first time with the United States and France in the Senkaku Islands, a territory disputed with China.

According to the report, the three countries plan to gather warships and landing forces on uninhabited islands of the Nansei Islands, a chain of islands shaped like a bow between Kyushu and Taiwan, in May next year to conduct landing and amphibious assault training.

The French Navy's training fleet, "Jean Bart," is scheduled to call at Japan in May next year, which will serve as an opportunity for the three countries to begin joint exercises.

The training is nominally for humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations. However, the program includes landing and amphibious assault on uninhabited islands using aircraft, as well as landing using amphibious vehicles and boats, which local Japanese media reported has many similarities to remote island defense and recapture operations.
