[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police, who have declared a 'war' on drunk driving, are now launching a nationwide simultaneous drunk driving crackdown at major highway entrances and exits.

The National Police Agency announced on the 6th that from the 7th until the end of January next year, they plan to conduct simultaneous drunk driving crackdowns twice a week at major toll gates and interchanges on highways nationwide.

From January to November this year, a total of 1,543 drunk driving cases were detected on highways, and 374 drunk driving-related traffic accidents occurred. A police official explained, "The perception that 'there is no drunk driving crackdown on highways' has become widespread, so this is being implemented as a special measure."

About 300 personnel, including highway patrol officers and safety patrol staff from Korea Expressway Corporation, will be mobilized for this crackdown. In particular, non-contact detectors will be used to prevent COVID-19, and an 'S-shaped driving lane' will be installed to detect drunk drivers and ensure safety. The S-shaped driving lane uses safety cones and patrol cars to guide vehicles to drive in a curved path before entering the checkpoint, allowing officers to check the driver's condition and encourage deceleration.

The police will actively investigate and punish passengers who aid drunk drivers, and vehicles of habitual drunk drivers will be confiscated. In addition to the nationwide simultaneous crackdown, continuous day and night crackdowns will be conducted regionally.

The National Police Agency urged the eradication of drunk driving, stating, "Drunk driving on highways is a serious crime that easily takes the lives of others and causes greater harm."
