[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police have launched a focused crackdown on major illegal activities threatening traffic safety, such as illegal modification of cargo truck leaf springs and reckless racing, through the end of the year. During November alone, more than 700 related offenders were apprehended.

The National Police Agency announced on the 5th that a total of 771 people were caught during the focused crackdown from November 2 to 30. By category, illegal tuning operators and drivers of illegally modified vehicles accounted for the largest number at 404.

Additionally, 156 drivers who caused harm to others through retaliatory driving and 147 who caused traffic hazards through reckless driving were also arrested. Fifty people involved in joint dangerous acts known as "pokjuraesing" (reckless racing) and 14 drivers who illegally dismantled speed limiters were also apprehended.

In actual cases, 29 drivers were booked for habitually racing foreign vehicles and causing noise and traffic hazards at Gajisan Tunnel in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, from July to October. At an auto repair shop in Siheung-si, Gyeonggi Province, a person was caught after illegally installing eight leaf springs on a cargo vehicle for 250,000 won.

The police will continue crackdowns until the 31st of this month under the supervision of the traffic crime investigation teams of each provincial police agency, targeting ▲ illegal vehicle modifications and reckless racing ▲ illegal dismantling of speed limiters ▲ reckless and retaliatory driving.

In particular, regarding illegal vehicle modifications and illegal dismantling of speed limiters, the police plan to respond strictly by tracking not only vehicle drivers but also manufacturers and maintenance companies. In cooperation with related agencies, illegally modified vehicles will be restored to their original state, and effective sanctions such as requesting business suspension for maintenance companies will be utilized.

A police official emphasized, "We will actively consider forced investigations such as detention for those causing serious damage or habitual offenders. Even after the focused crackdown period, we will continuously crack down on illegal acts threatening traffic safety to reduce traffic accidents and create a safe traffic environment."
