[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on the 4th that it held the '2020 Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Business Forum' at its headquarters in Gyeongju and the Seoul UAE Business Center.
About 70 participants, including officials from nuclear power public institutions and domestic and international nuclear power plant decommissioning companies, attended the forum. It was held online to comply with quarantine guidelines.
The forum, held under the theme of 'Establishing Infrastructure for Creating an Early Market in Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning,' introduced the current status of domestic nuclear power plant decommissioning efforts and shared experiences and issues from major countries such as South Korea, the United States, Canada, Germany, and France.
An awards ceremony for the nuclear power plant decommissioning idea contest was held. In the industrial sector, Kones Corporation received the grand prize for 'Establishing an Integrated Platform and Developing Analysis Tools for Detailed Cost Evaluation of Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning.'
In the university (graduate) student category, Mr. Shin Seunghoon from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) won the grand prize for his idea titled 'AI Camera and Sensor for Checking Workers' Safety Equipment Wearing.'
KHNP plans to review whether the awarded ideas can be applied to its projects.
A virtual signing ceremony for a decommissioning cooperation agreement between KHNP and Orano, the French state-owned nuclear company, was also held.
Through this agreement, excellent personnel from domestic industries, including KHNP, will be able to participate in decommissioning projects in France for a certain period.
Jung Jae-hoon, President of KHNP, said, "We will use the overseas nuclear power plant decommissioning cases shared through the forum as a foundation for safe and economical nuclear power plant decommissioning."
